Renovation of the Heart: Putting on the Character of Christ
by Dallas Willard
NavPress (2002); 255 pages
About the Book
Willard defines spiritual formation as "the process by which the human spirit or will is given a definite 'form' or character." The goal of the Christian, then, is to allow the Holy Spirit to transform "the inner world of the human self in such a way that it becomes like the inner being of Christ himself." The means of this transformation is the "methodical path of recovery" described in Scripture. This book describes, in greater depth than Mulholland's, a biblical view of the heart of humankind, why it needs transformation, and how that transformation takes place.
How It Will Help
Because this book provides a comprehensive explanation of the necessity and purpose of the spiritual disciplines, it would be particularly useful if paired with a more practical guide (such as Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline).
