Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life
by Donald S. Whitney
NavPress (1991); 238 pages
About the Book
Whitney argues that God uses three means of changing us: people, circumstances, and the disciplines. The last of these is the only one we have any real control over. Thus, Whitney calls us to a life of godliness via the spiritual disciplines. Interestingly, Whitney's list of disciplines is quite unlike Foster's or Willard's. Whitney's disciplines are, in a sense, more "traditional"; they might be considered Christian duties rather than Christian disciplines.
How It Will Help
This book might be a helpful way to draw more conservative or traditional congregationsthose to whom the term "spiritual formation" sounds too mysticalinto the conversation. Rather than introducing new practices, he calls old practices by new names. Also, one might use Whitney's insight that we are transformed by people, circumstances, and disciplines to develop a series addressing each of these elements (How People Transform Us, How Circumstances Transform Us, How Disciplines Transform Us).
