This tiny volume can be devoured in an hour, but it could take a lifetime to digest. Nouwen presents three temptations that beset the minister and prescribes a spiritual discipline for countering each one. Drawing upon lessons he learned when he transitioned from work among academics to ministry among the mentally handicapped, Nouwen addresses the ways a preacher's self-understanding may undermine the goal of spiritual formation in his ministry.

This book will have greater impact on the preacher's presentation and expectations than on his or her content. Ultimately, Nouwen claims that we cannot preach spiritual formation until we have first experienced transformation. Taking his advice to heart will likely result in experiencing greater success in preaching for spiritual formation.

Henri Nouwen was a Catholic priest, pastor, author, and professor who taught at multiple theological institutions in his home country of the Netherlands as well as the United States, including the University of Notre Dame and Yale and Harvard divinity schools.

He spent the final years of his life living among the physically and mentally disabled as pastor of L'Arche Daybreak Community in Toronto, Canada.
