Douglas Burford, a pastor in Mission, Kansas, writes:

His name was David. He was homeless and in his 40s, though his face suggested even more years of struggle. His demeanor seemed to me to say he no longer trusted anyone.

He had called the church looking for bus fare. We don’t give bus fare, but I agreed to meet him anyway. He poured out to me an abbreviated autobiography riddled with accounts of abuse and broken relationships. It was a story line not untypical for people who come to call the street home. Except for the clincher. He had come to an unsettling conclusion regarding life.

"I look at it this way," he said. "If I have a good day, I win. If I have a bad day, God wins."
