"The Lion King": Substitutionary Sacrifice
Disney's animation The Lion King portrays the primal struggle between good and evil through its main character. Simba, a cub on his way to becoming the lion king, faces trials that help him understand his purpose in life.
From the time of Simba's birth, Scar, Simba's uncle, has resented that he has been replaced as next in line to the throne. He knows the crown prince is entitled to the kingdom's wealth and power. Determined to become king, Scar hatches a deadly plot. He entices Simba to a rock in a clearing, where he signals the hyenas, his evil accomplices, to begin a stampede of wildebeests. He knows that as soon as Mufasa, Simba's father, hears that Simba is in trouble, Mufasa will come to rescue his son; both then will be caught in his deadly trap.
The earth trembles as the stampeding animals approach the innocent cub. Simba realizes he is in danger and attempts to outrun the stampede. Just in the nick of time, his father, Mufasa, arrives, and with a flick of his paw he pushes young Simba to safety. But in the process the king is trampled. Bleeding, Mufasa tries to scale a steep cliff, where his brother watches with glee. Instead of reaching out to pull his brother up, Scar claws the king's paws, causing Mufasa to fall to his death below.
Young Simba approaches the carcass, unaware that his dad gave his life to save his. He nuzzles his dad's mane and calls out, "Dad. Dad. Get up, Dad."
