"Breakfast at Tiffany's": Afraid of Love
The classic film Breakfast at Tiffany's follows the escapades of New York playgirl Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) as she tries in vain to snare a Brazilian millionaire as a husband. The problem is, Holly cannot escape the issues that have dominated her life. Unsatisfied with herself, she has changed her name and run away from her husband and children. She struggles to receive love and fears connecting personally with anyone—so much so that she won't even name her cat.
Through the course of the movie, Holly develops a relationship with her neighbor, Paul, who falls in love with her. As they drive through rainy Manhattan in a cab in the last scene of the movie, Paul tells Holly about his feelings. Holly simply doesn't know what to do. She immediately says that she doesn't want to be put in a cage by his love, and that she can't bear to belong to anyone.
Frustrated, Paul has the cab pull over and steps out into the rain, but not before speaking the honest truth. It's the same truth that God would speak to many of us who keep out his love because of our own fears and shame and hiding.
"You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You're chicken; you've got no guts. You call yourself a free spirit, a 'wild thing,' and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well, baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."
For the first time in her life, Holly actually responds to the truth and gets out of the cab to find Paul and take a chance on love.
