IKEA—Masters of Innovation and Refugee Relief

Who would have thought that IKEA, masters of cheap but affordable stuff for your home, would develop a simple idea that would revolutionize refugee resettlement around the globe? According to a recent report, "Prior to the IKEA collaboration, the UNCHR [United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees] was only able to provide tents or converted mass-shelters for the influx of refugees into countries around the world. Now, with IKEA's help, these displaced citizens will not only have privacy and comfort, but the dignity of having their own place."

IKEA has developed lightweight plastic shelters, with rooftop solar panels, that come flat packed for easy transport. Assembly of the 188 square foot hut is easy and can be built in just four hours. Five people can sleep comfortably inside, which is twice the size of the regulation refugee tent. As the company explains, IKEA has the "knowledge to make things easy to pack, easy to move, and easy to use."

Possible Preaching Angle:

You have to love the way IKEA is using their experience to fulfill a real need. It's a great challenge for the church to respond to needs with our knowledge and experience.
