The Hope of Restoration in the Film 'The Force Awakens'
"This will begin to make things right." This is the very first line of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Some Star Wars enthusiasts feel this not only introduces the storyline of that movie, but it also serves as a jab to what came before it. Many fans felt the original three Star Wars movies, Episodes IV-VI, were a perfect creation. They were new, brilliant, and complete.
But then sin entered the world when George Lucas decided to write and direct three more movies, Episodes I-III. The fall is most clearly illustrated in characters like Jar Jar Binks, in the rebellious attitude of Anakin Skywalker, and the meaningless death of Padmé Amidala. This is why the first line of The Force Awakens is good news. The new director, J.J. Abrams, promises a restoration, a new beginning, and a fresh start.
Possible Preaching Angle: Perhaps this is a small detail (and maybe you're not a Star Wars fan), but it may also serve as a tiny clue to a deep hunger in the human heart: the longing for restoration, the dream of a new start for ourselves and for all of creation. Through his life, death, resurrection, and promised return, Jesus has given us the true hope and ground for restoration. Do you believe Jesus can begin to make things right?
