Matt Damon Regrets Talking More than Listening
During a January taping of NBC's The Today Show , Matt Damon expressed regret for some of the comments he made in response to the furor over sexual harassment and assault.
In December, Damon appeared on ABC News to discuss Harvey Weinstein and sexual harassment and sexual assault in general. Damon was quick to draw a distinction between criminal acts and those that are "just gross," citing Al Franken and Louie C.K. as examples of men who should be forgiven for what he perceived to be one-time offenses.
That idea was quickly proven to be erroneous. Various women subsequently accused both Louis C.K. and Al Franken of a series of sexual offenses. Both men suffered professional backlash. After his ABC News appearance, Damon was sharply criticized online by many prominent women in Hollywood, including Minnie Driver and Alyssa Milano.
In response, Damon told The Today Show that he didn't realize that so many of the women who were actively mobilized in active resistance to sexual harassment were personal friends of his. "I really wish I'd listened a lot more before I'd weighed in on this," he said. "I want to be a part of that change, and want to go along for the ride, but I should get in the back seat and close my mouth for a while."
