Report Blames Boeing's 'Culture of Concealment' for Crashes
A congressional investigation into the 737 Max airplane found culpability with both Boeing, the airplane manufacturer, as well as the FAA, the agency charged with its critical oversight. Specifically, the report criticizes Boeing for having a “culture of concealment,” and for the agency for being “fundamentally flawed.”
All 737 Max airplanes have been removed from active use since March of 2019, after two crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia resulted in the deaths of over 300 people on board.
According to the report, the fatalities happened because of failures across the board: "[The crashes] were the horrific culmination of a series of faulty technical assumptions by Boeing's engineers, a lack of transparency on the part of Boeing's management, and grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA."
Boeing has promised fundamental changes, both in its internal management structure as well as the structure of the 737 Max.
