Reducing Preaching Pressure
Preachers put themselves under a lot of pressure. Of course this isn't all bad. After all, we are handling God's Word. But sometimes the pressure is about us, not God. For instance, there's often a self-imposed strain to say something strikingly new and daringly original week after week. We want to impress people so they'll leave whispering, "Wow, I have never heard that before!" Sure, be as creative as God allows, but follow "Peter's Law of Preaching."
According to Peter's Law, preaching doesn't always involve saying something amazingly creative. At times—maybe most of the time—good preaching means "to stir [others] up by way of reminder" (2 Peter 1:13). Most people don't need another wow. They just need a clear, biblically-based, firm or gentle (depending on the situation) reminder from a pastor who loves them. Preacher, you can do that. You're the best one to do that. So this week take a load off your shoulders and stir some folks up by with a well-preached reminder.
