Preach Without Your Cultural Blinders
Are you guilty of preaching with cultural blinders? In other words, your interpretation of Scripture may not be wrong; it's just limited by your own cultural biases. You have half the story. Our summer series, "Global Preaching Voices," provides some fascinating perspectives on Scripture from preachers who live and minister in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This week we feature a refreshing challenge from Vintoh Ramachandra, a brother in Christ from Sri Lanka. His sermon—"Rethinking the Great Commission"—provides some provocative angles on becoming the kind of disciples who actually fulfill Jesus' command.
By the way, one of our subscribers, offered some cogent thoughts on why he appreciates hearing sermons from outside our cultural context. John Sommerville, pastor of City Churchy in Minneapolis wrote to us and said, "Listening to global preachers exposes my cultural blind spots. They help me see how much I've been shaped by individualism, consumerism, and philosophical naturalism. Global preachers also have an urgency that's often lacking in the North American church. They preach with greater awareness of the struggle between the powers of darkness and the power of the Spirit." So we hope you're enjoying our summer series, "Global Preaching Voices."
