Work. God Loves It.

I'll never forget the day when it finally hit me that work matters to God—not just my work, but the work of every member in my church. I was sitting in a biochemistry classroom watching my friend Bob, a church member and PhD professor, lecture on how a human cell works. As Bob explained it all in purely scientific terms, I thought to myself, God's creative genius is amazing! Somebody has to tell people about how the intricacies of the human cell point to a Designer. And then it hit me: Bob does that every day. That's his job. In this week's sermon—"Empowered for Work"—David Kim from Redeemer Presbyterian in Manhattan, provides a stirring sermon based on Ezekiel 37 ("Can these dry bones live?") about helping people experience the power of the Holy Spirit in their daily work.

In this week's preaching skills article, Krish Kandiah from London, England contrasts two ways to approach preaching—the "solitary individual model" and the "specific community model." Krish asks, "How can we learn how to preach into the specific needs of our church community? Notice, I said church, not just local individual Christians. How can we preach not just to individuals but to the corporate body of Christ that God has placed in our care?" Good questions. Check out the problem of the "solitary individual" approach to preaching and his helpful suggestions for learning how to preach to your congregation.
