4 Questions to Diagnose Your Sermon

Daniel Fusco

Daniel Fusco

As we kick off our "Back to the Basics" skills article series, we pulled together a veteran preacher/preaching coach (that'd be yours truly) and a dynamic young preacher (Daniel Fusco from Vancouver, Washington) and asked them to explore how to diagnose every sermon you preach. Think of them as four simple, routine, diagnostic questions that will help you prepare and then evaluate every sermon. Check it out here. I'll admit that there's nothing earth-shattering in these four questions. But whether we're playing a NBA playoff game, trying to eat healthier, planting a garden, or writing a sermon sometimes we need to get back to the basics.

To spark your ideas about Mother's Day preaching, we offer David Prince's fabulous sermon "The Mighty Warrior Who Saves Moms." I love how David takes a beautiful Old Testament text, engages in some solid exegesis, and then throughout this sermon applies the text to the joys and challenges of motherhood. He offers this word of encouragement: "A lot of moms get lost in the daily-ness, and they believe the gospel for everybody else … On a daily basis, they get a performance mentality. They see their flaws. They wonder if they're messing their kids up … In Jesus Christ, he loves you with sovereign, overwhelming love that issues forth in delight and song."
