Politics in the Pulpit

Mika Edmondson

Mika Edmondson

It's the craziest, most interesting, and perhaps most depressing presidential election season in my lifetime. Donald or Hilary. Left or Right. Republican or Democrat. Our country is polarized—and maybe your congregation is too. So how do you preach in the midst of this political melee? Should you avoid it and focus on the Bible? But then again, doesn't the Bible address political issues? Read our new resource from Mika Edmondson on "Preaching on Politics from the Pulpit." Be warned: this article will challenge your thinking! I loved this, for instance: "Preachers become co-opted pawns of political factions when their moral message parrots the talking points of any political platform. Informed by the revelation of God's Word, gospel preachers can see moral truth that political parties cannot."

As part of our "Politics in the Pulpit" series we also offer this sermon from Dan Meyer—"Pointing Fingers: Is God a Republican or a Democrat?" The answer is "definitely neither" and "probably both" at the same time. Over the next three weeks we'll be posting more preaching skills articles and sermons to stir and challenge your thinking about how to preach in a partisan political climate.
