Distraction, Self-obsession, and ‘Generation Cool’

Here's an interesting interview/article with two young artists from San Francisco. Sam Fuchs and Adam Gray create huge collage-style images from online pictures. They also offer some very preachable quotes about how social media and distraction are impacting our lives:

  • "I feel like distraction has a big part to do with our generation's story …. I wonder what sort of effect it will have on us in ten years. But it doesn't seem like it's trending towards a more productive future for us …."
  • "Everyone's sort of mentally obese," explains Fuchs, commenting on the overload of images and possibilities we are exposed to every day online. "I feel like distraction has a big part to do with our generation's story."
  • "We will not be a great generation," says Gray. "We are too self-absorbed, spending most of our time on frivolous things, like posting photos of ourselves. We're just the cool kids; we'll be the cool generation."
